Herat Directorate of Agriculture said that various reasons have led to an increase in onion production in the province.
Hamidullah Naseri, general director of extension for Herat's agriculture directorate, said, that the interest of farmers and plentiful precipitation had led to a dramatic increase in production this year compared to last year.
According to him, on average, 40 tons of onions have been harvested from each hectare of onion field this year, and due to the increase in farms, the yield is much higher than last year.
According to the statistics of the Statistics and Information Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture (MAIL), in 2009, 1,047 hectares of onion land were planted in Herat, from which 34,730 tons of onions were obtained.
This year, however, the Directorate of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) of Herat Province said that there has been a significant increase in onion cultivation and yields.
According to the Herat Directorate of Agriculture, onions are mostly grown in Zinda Jan, Pashtun Zarghun, Ghorian, Karkh, Guzara and Injil districts.
According to the directorate, most of Herat's onions are consumed within the province and exported in very small quantities to neighboring provinces.
Currently, the average price of a kilo of onion in the Herat market is 15 AFN.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture has established 419 onion storages for onion farmers in the province this year through the Agricultural Products Management Project.
The purpose of building these infrastructures for the farmers is to keep their products and not to let them rot. Also offer to the market at a reasonable price for the customers.
