The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock (MAIL) through its National Horticulture and Livestock Program (NHLP) has built 750 acres of pear garden in Balkh province. The yields of the gardens have increased by 30 percent compared to the previous year.

A number of Balkh districts is well suited for pear gardens, one of which is Balkh district.

In Balkh district, since the beginning of NHLP activities, nearly 1,000 acres of modern fruit gardens have been built, one of which is pear garden of Haji Mohammad Taher in ‘Palas Posh’ village.

Haji Mohammad Taher has 7.5 acres of fruit garden, 2.5 acres of which is pear garden.

Mohammad Taher says he used to cultivate wheat, corn, or cotton in the past, and most of the time the income was less than what he spent on the fields but last year he earned over 200,000 AFN from his half an acres of pear garden.

Mohammad Taher says that he owes the increase of his gardens to the precise guidance of Mohammad Tawfiq Rasouli, promotion staff of NHLP in Balkh. He is very pleased with the activities of MAIL’s NHLP in the province.

He intends to build the rest of his lands fruit gardens in the coming year.
