Wheat yields have increased by 54 percent in Badghis province compared to last previous years.
Badghis Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock Directorate said that farmers in the province could produce 144,000 metric tons of wheat this year. ‘
The directorate added that this year some 12,800 hectares of irrigated land and 48,300 hectares of rain-fed land were cultivated wheat.
Estimates show that 3,214 kilograms of wheat were harvested from each hectare of irrigated land while 2,131 kilograms of wheat were harvested from each hectare of rain-fed land.
Sufficient and timely rainfalls, distribution of improved seeds and fertilizer by the Ministry of Agriculture and partner organizations, complete control of plant pests, especially locusts and shrimp were the main cause of the hike in the wheat yields in the province this year.
