Strengthened Approach for the Integration of Sustainable Environmental Management into the ANDS/PRSP (MDGF-1713)

Location: Herat, Badghis and Ghor province in western region of Afghanistan

Status: Ongoing

Objective: To promote a strengthened approach for the integration of sustainable environmental management
into Afghanistan National Development Strategy (ANDS) and the MDGs to result in environmentally sustainable growth

Components:
Capacity building, environment and community based natural resources management.

Progress/ Achievements
a. Capacity building:

  • Capacity building of 566 individuals from involved community development councils CDC (s), communities members, MAIL NEPA and university students and masters
  • Conducted counterparts and trainees and masters of University on community selection and mobilization twice (120 Persons)
  • Conducted training to counterparts and trainees of university and masters in rangeland law (old and new) (60 Persons)
  • Conducted training to counterpart in community base natural resources management and rangeland conservation in Afghanistan (60 Persons)
  • Conducted training in Kitchen gardening to governmental counterparts (20 Persons)
  • Conducted 6 types of trainings to all Kitchen gardening beneficiaries (172 Persons)
  • Conducted training to governmental counterparts in rain fed forage production (16 Persons)
  • Conducted training to involved communities members in natural resources Environmental Management (30 Persons)
  • Conducted training to counterparts on GPS unit (8 persons)
  • Conducted training to CDC leader and environment committee members together with UNDP team in community base natural resources management/environment protection (40 Persons)
  • Conducted training to counterparts and CDC + Environment committee members on NRM, rangeland and environment improvement and extension (30 Persons)
  • Conducted training to counterparts in project monitoring and evaluation ( 10 Persons)
  • Conducted training to (42 Persons) as CDC members and involved villagers/farmers on seed collection and rangeland restoration interventions theoretically and practically
  • (100 Persons) have been trained on rangeland improvement and extension as CDC members and involved villagers/farmers in Herat and Ghor provinces

b. Seed multiplication:

  • Created seed multiplication kits for Agrophyron desert rum spp. (rain fed forage grass) and Kochia prostrate (rain fed forage shrub) about 28 Jerib in Herat province
  • Created seed multiplication site for Agrophyron Spp. (rain fed forage grass), Kochia prostrate (rain fed forage shrub) and tree nursery about 4.5 Jireb in Ghor province
  • 1000 Kg local plants and trees seeds have been harvest / collected, to be utilized in rangeland restoration

c. Infrastructure building:

  • 22m x 3m Ghor-DAIL compound wall fundamentally built;
  • 3.5m x 3m, iron fundamental main gate “door” of Ghor DAIL department has been made and installed;
  • Built a 3x4 room and painted it and the hall to the DAIL department in Ghor province
  • A deep well built in Zendajan DAIL farm
  • Built a room 3X4 for deep well on Zendajan DAIL farm
  • 24 KW water pump will be installed very soon, to use for irrigation purpose of the forage production area and future utilize for the entire DAIL farm
  • 4 deep wells repaired/rehabilitated in agriculture faculty research farm of Herat University, located in Dasht-e House

d. Kitchen gardening:

  • 272 kitchen gardening (11 varieties of vegetables) have been completed in Herat and Ghor provinces
  • 240 Kitchen gardening is on-going in Herat province
  • 240 Toolkits (contains 11 items) had been distributed to overall Kitchen gardening beneficiaries in Herat province
  • 180 Kitchen gardens has been established in Badghis province
  • 480 Poultry rising sub-project have been initiated overdue Ghor and Herat Provinces

e. Rangeland restoration:

  • 435 Jirebs = 87 hectares area has been restored in Herat province;
  • 110 Jirebs = 22 hectares area has been restored in Ghor province;
  • 9000, Pinus saplings planted in Herat province;
  • 6000, divers saplings planted in Ghor province;
  • 60000, pistachio saplings distributed to 520 individual farmers in Badghis;
  • 34359, none fruit trees saplings distributed to 520 individual farmers in Badghis;
  • 10000, Apple saplings has distributed to 560 individual beneficiaries in Ghor;
  • 4000, fruit tree saplings has distributed to 560 individual beneficiaries in Ghor;
  • 2000, none fruit trees saplings distributed to individual farmers in Ghor province

Challenges

  • Insecurity, which restricted national and international staff regular/required field visits
  • Unclear situation of the project extension, aiming better planning, while the second quarter activities have been planned

Recommendations

  • Extension of the project, to follow on all these interventions, and continue training of partners to continue these interventions beyond the life of the project
  • Increase the number of similar intervention to conserve the natural resources, and avoid deterioration in this important sector.
