What is NHLP?


The National Horticulture and Livestock Project (NHLP), a project of MAIL, it aims at stimulating marketable output of perennial horticulture and livestock in focus areas.  NHLP is the first stage in a program that will unfold over the coming decade to support National  horticulture and livestock sectors nationwide to assist farmers rehabilitate less productive orchards and establish new orchards of almond, apricot, grape and pomegranate. In the livestock sector, NHLP promotes poultry, dairy production and animal health services. At project maturity, NHLP is expected to bring about quantitative and qualitative improvements in the production capacity of the horticulture and livestock sectors, including product market channels resulting in increased export volumes and import substitution.

NHLP comprises four technical components - Horticulture, Livestock, Farmers Organization Development and Institutional Capacity Building. The Project Management ensures smooth planning and implementation of these components by providing General Administration, Procurement, Finance, and Monitoring & Evaluation support services. The Lead Facilitating Partner, GIZ International Services (GIZ-IS) coordinates on behalf of the donors and MAIL. Different specialized Facilitating Partners (FPs) implement HLP programs at sub-national level.

NHLP is working toward gender-balanced integration of horticulture and livestock sectors in eleven provinces. NHLP is funded by the World Bank and the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF).
